Traditional 160 TESOL course in Philadelphia

This course is taught in a traditional classroom setting in a Language School. Students will have the opportunity to observe classes of varying English levels on-site. Students will have the opportunity to tutor an ESL student, an overview of the TKT, the profession of TESOL and employment as well as placement assistance is provided. This course includes: language teaching and learning, teaching resources, creating course outlines and lesson plans, classroom management, current methodologies, learner types and acquisition, assessing learner achievement, teaching specific skills individually or as integrated skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking, classroom observation, tutoring, research, teaching for standardized tests, teaching for specific purposes and professional development.


Teaching for standardized tests will include an overview of the TOEIC, TOEFL and IETLS.
Teaching English for Specific purposes will include teaching and planning business English.
Online 100 hour course


This course is taught entirely online. Participants must have comfort with technology, have access to a student group for observation and have access to a student for tutoring. Access to a library is also helpful. This course includes: language teaching and learning, teaching resources, creating course outlines and lesson plans, classroom management, current methodologies, learner types and acquisition, assessing learner achievement, teaching specific skills individually or as integrated skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking, classroom observation and tutoring.

TESOL course and program requirements:

The TESOL certificate program is a group of courses that are intended for:

a) People who are new to teaching English to speakers of other languages
b) ESL/ESOL/EFL teachers who are looking to expand their knowledge
c) Mainstream classroom teachers who want to expand their area of expertise

Program requirements:

While a college degree is recommended a high school degree or equivalent is required.  You should check the requirements in the region you wish to teach.  Countries, states, districts, schools or centers have their own requirements.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency. Proof of English proficiency includes:

a) a high school or college diploma and transcript for a school in a country where English is the main language
b) a masters degree in English Language
c) evidence of two or more years of employment in an English speaking country in position that required English mastery
d) A grade of B or higher on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English
e) A BYU certificate of Advanced English (level 3 certificate)
f) A minimum of the following TOEFL score(s): cBT - 250, pBT - 600, iBT - 25 each section
g) An IETLS score of 7 or higher in all areas
h) Evaluation (oral and paper) at a Wizard or BCE school or authorized partner school
i) Wizard secure online application assessment and phone interview


Applicants must complete the TESOL application and include a personal statement and resume with the submission.

What you should know about our teaching certificate programs:

a) They require extensive reading and analysis that is equal to college level work
b) Tutoring/Mentoring is required regardless of your location - this will be graded and verified
c) You must submit work via email or post it to an online classroom
d) You will be required to plan and 'mock teach' lessons for your peers.  Online students will submit their lessons by email either as a video or as a power point with your voice recording (this will require comfort with technology)
e) Academic dishonesty will NOT be tolerated
f) You must complete and be proficient in 70% of all course work to earn a course diploma or certificate
g) you will be responsible for securing the required books and materials

Students who enroll in the online program must be comfortable using technology and have access to ESOL classes or students for observation and tutoring.

Students who enroll in the traditional 160 hour course in Philadelphia must be willing to both observe ESOL classes of multiple levels and participate in ESOL tutoring. This will be arranged for you.

TKT studying support is offered for both courses. Help arranging the Teaching Knowledge Test is available for students studying in Philadelphia.

A good understanding of English grammar and the language is essential however an add on module 'Grammar for teachers' is available for those who know how to use the grammar but need to learn how to teach it.

 

Course and Options:

  • Full time 8 week: 160 hour program
  • Part time 15 week: 160 hour program
  • Online: 100 hour program is $250.00 USD and does not require any books.

Credit & Discounts: Students who pay in full, AAA members and currently enrolled students are eligible for discounts.

Students who are in good academic and financial standing with Wizard are afforded a payment plan upon request.  Payment plan schedules depend on class schedules.  Typically the full amount of the tuition is spread across three to four scheduled payments.

Students may pay by cash, check or Visa, MasterCard, PayPal or wire transfer.

Who can study:  Anyone who is 18 years old, has a minimum of a high school diploma and is proficient in English can study.  International applicants are accepted but must travel here independently.

 

Group or Private Study:

The prices above are based on group study in a group of about 8 to 12 other students.  Private and semi-private classes can be arranged by the pricing will be different.

 

On-site Study:

Wizard can send teacher-trainers to your school to train your staff.  The cost will depend on travel costs, the length of delivery and how many people need training.

 

Our Application Process

Candidates need to fill out the TESOL application not the general application and submit it with an essay or personal statement and a resume.  Once your complete application is received you will be contacted by email or phone.  You may be required to perform an application assessment and phone interview to evaluate your English or assess your suitability for the program.   Once your application process is complete selected candidates will receive a letter by email or mail notifying them of their acceptance that contains registration instructions.
